"It's a pivotal time to be a part of mining": Interview with Denise C. Johnson

In December 2022, the first woman was inducted into the American Mining Hall of Fame of the Mining and Minerals Education Foundation. Originally from Michigan, Denise C. Johnson, Group President, Resource Industries of Caterpillar Inc. has grown her influence across different industries, and is now an inspiration to young women pursuing careers in the mining industry.
Johnson received her Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University after exploring potential fields. Good at math and science, Johnson “wanted a career that could provide a future.” Mechanical engineering is a field that is broad and could provide her with countless opportunities.
During her undergraduate career, she interned at General Motors, where she would join the product design team upon graduation. For Johnson, meeting new people was influential for her life and her career. She loved the exposure to diversity of thought, learning new things through people, gaining opportunities to network, and building lifelong friendships.
“I knew I didn’t want to sit behind a desk,” says Johnson. She was able to apply technical skills in her classes during her internships. Mechanical engineering interested Johnson because you could visually see the impact of your work. “To solve problems it takes a team... It’s rewarding to see something go into production… part of you is part of the product.”
Wanting to go back to school, Johnson competed for a fellowship at GM. After winning, she went to MIT for her graduate program. She completed a dual master's program, where she earned her Master’s in mechanical engineering and an MBA.
Johnson made the move to Caterpillar Inc. after being introduced by a friend who thought she would make a great fit at the company. After interviewing and learning more about the company, Johnson was brought on to the team. She is now a Group President of Resource Industries.
"Every day is a new challenge,” says Johnson. “There’s never been a more exciting time to be a part of the [mining] industry.”
Johnson works with mine sites and different companies to understand their needs. Sites utilize machines that need to be durable and operate on a constant schedule, so Caterpillar is under constant development to improve their products. As the industry grows towards a renewable future, Caterpillar is meeting their demands, providing companies with leading technology that’s getting more efficient and greener.
Johnson’s advice for students? “Be willing to build a foundational understanding” in what you’re working on. Dig deep into what you’re learning and expand on that. “Be the best you can be at” your specific position or job, and that will take you places.
“When things get tough, and they will… don’t give up,” says Johnson. Even if there’s moments that make you question what you’re doing, push through. “You’ll look back and see how you’re happy you didn’t give up.”
